Description: |
Located in the heart of the Historic mining support town of McCarthy. A turn of the century railroad town providing support and entertainment to the great copper mine of Kennecott, now part of the Wrangell - St. Elias National Park. This park is a thirteen million acre World Heritage Site of rugged mountain ranges, awesome glaciers and alluvial river systems. We truly are located in some of Alaska's most spectacular country.
McCarthy Ventures is about service. Service to our community and service to our guests visiting this spectacular area of Alaska. We are a year around enterprise. In the depths of winter we function as a warm central place to meet your friends on one of the two days a week when the mail is delivered by small plane to our community. We are quite spread out here in McCarthy and it can take a lot of effort to go a visiting. We sponsor events and potlucks to keep away the cabin fever that is so easy to succumb to here in the far north.
We operate several businesses and rental properties in the historic community of McCarthy /Kennecott, located in the Wrangell Mountains, Alaska. Today our town is surrounded by a 13 million acre National Park - the Wrangell - St. Elias National Park. This has brought to our communities many changes over the last 10 years. We continue to adjust to these changes and our community valiantly struggles to adapt ourselves to living with the Federal Parks bureaucratic and sometimes frustrating agenda. The increase in visitors over the years means that some newer businesses have been able to thrive and residents of our remote town don't have to leave their families for months on end to earn a living. However we also contend with having our access limited to the renewable resources of our surrounding lands and these traditional uses can be expensive to go without, as fuel and building materials must be purchased and transported hundreds of miles. Living in Alaska's remoter areas can be so spiritually fulfilling but realistically it is a very expensive lifestyle. Few outsiders appreciate this fact.
